To work as an ambulance driver, you must hold a Light Rigid (LR) Driver’s Licence. If you do not have an LR licence, you must have at least a Queensland ‘C’ Class Driver Licence for a manual vehicle and be able to obtain your Light Rigid (LR) prior to your appointment
Drivers with an automatic LR or Car driver’s licence must first upgrade to an LR manual or Class C Licence before applying to the ambulance service. Both our vehicles are Automatic, which for most drivers will give you a manual LR licence provided you hold a Manual car licence. If you however you only have an Automatic Car licence you will either have to do a driving test in a manual car either before or after you obtain your Light Rigid licence.
If you intend to work as an ambulance transport driver, you need a Light Rigid Licence. With this licence type, you can also drive a motorhome and any other vehicle weighing 4,500 and 8 tonnes GVM.
