Heavy Rigid Truck Licence

  • Having a Heavy Rigid Truck Licence will allow you to drive trucks and vehicles with 3 or more axles and over 8T GVM.
  • Burleigh Driver Training School provides one-on-one HR Truck Licence Training on the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Twee heads, Murwillumbah, QLD, and NSW.
  • We will help you pass your HR Licence Test in QLD or NSW HVCBA course to allow which will allow you to drive a large range of heavy vehicles.
  • If you have a manual car licence and only wanting to obtain a Condition B (Synchromesh) licence, you may want to complete you test in the automatic. Making it easier in obtaining your Heavy Rigid Truck Licence.
  • If you have an automatic car licence and want a Heavy Rigid Truck Licence you may consider completing your test in our Heavy Rigid Synchromesh Truck. When you have completed your test in our manual truck, you will also have a manual car licence.

 

Helpful Information for HR Truck Licence Holder:

  • Truck or Bus of more than 8 tonne GVM with a minimum of 3 axles.
  • An Articulated (Bendy) Bus
  • A Heavy Rigid Vehicle can also tow a trailer of up to 9 tonne GVM.
  • Allows you to drive a Light Rigid or Medium Rigid Vehicle and provide your licence gearbox restrictions are respected.

 

Our Truck’s

  • There are three vehicle options in conducting your lessons and test, which vehicle you choose will depend on you current licence conditions as well as the vehicles you intend to drive.

Heavy Rigid Automatic – Our heavy rigid truck has a 12 speed automatic gearbox.

On passing your licence test in this vehicle you will have either;
(1.) A HR Condition A– A licence restricting you to drive an automatic vehicle or;
(2.) A HR Condition B– A licence allowing you to also drive synchromesh and automatic gearbox truck. This is the case where you hold an open c class (car) licence. (See Licence Conditions Explained)
(3.) A HR Unrestricted– A licence if you hold an unrestricted medium rigid licence which is often the case for participants who have transferred their licence from New Zealand or have help a medium rigid licence for a 20 + years heavy rigid synchromesh.

  • Our Heavy Rigid Synchromesh Truck has a 6 speed synchromesh gearbox. A synchromesh gearbox is the same style that you find in manual cars. If you are used to a manual car you should have no problems changing gears in this truck.
  • On passing your licence test in this vehicle you will have HR Condition B licence allowing you to drive a Synchromesh Gearbox Truck and an Automatic Truck.
  • An HR Unrestricted licence if you hold an unrestricted Medium Rigid Licence which is often the case for participants who have transferred their licence from New Zealand or have help a medium rigid licence for a 20 + years.

Heavy Rigid Road Ranger Manual

  • Our Heavy Rigid Road Ranger Truck has a 13 speed overdrive crash/road ranger gearbox. This will require doubling the clutch on both up and down changes of gear as well as matching the revs.
  •  On passing your licence test in this vehicle you will have a heavy rigid unrestricted licence. This allows you to drive any heavy rigid vehicle. (See Licence Conditions Explained).

Employment Opportunities

  • Larger council buses

    Obtaining a Heavy Rigid Truck Licence will open great job opportunities for you. You are entitled to drive larger council buses such as bendy or double decker buses therefore while most of their fleet will be MR’s they like you to have a heavy rigid licence.

  • Coaches

    Such as operated by Greyhound or Murrays are generally heavy rigid vehicles.

  • Local Deliveries

    Ie Parcel and Freight Delivery’s with companies such as Toll or TNT have many Heavy Rigid Trucks.

  • Emergency Services

    While normally requiring a medium rigid licence do have some heavy rigid vehicles.

  • Earth Moving Contractors

    They often have a large number of heavy rigid vehicles for their general cartage work.

  • Removalist

    Heavy Rigid Trucks are often used for larger moving jobs.

  • Waste Management Companies such as JJ Richards

Requirement’s to obtain a Heavy Rigid Licence:
  • You must, have held a Provisional or Open C Class (Car) Licence for a period of 2 years or;
  • Pay the appropriate fee and pass the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test with Queensland Transport
    (This is not required if you already hold a Heavy Vehicle Licence).
  • Pay the appropriate fee and pass the practical Heavy Vehicle Driving Test with Queensland Transport
    (The vehicle for this test must have a GVM of greater than 15 Tonnes).
How many lessons will I need to get my Heavy Rigid HR Licence?
The number of lesson you will need will depend on which vehicle you plan to conduct you HR licence test in.
The expected time frames are listed below.
Heavy Rigid Licence Automatic
3 to 4 Lessons are normally required to enable you to pass the practical Heavy Vehicle Driving Test with Queensland Transport in this vehicle.
Heavy Rigid Synchromesh Manual
4 to 5 Lessons are normally required to enable you to pass the practical Heavy Vehicle Driving Test with Queensland Transport.
Heavy Rigid Road Ranger Manual (Open Licence)
8 to 10 Lessons are normally required to enable you to pass the practical Heavy Vehicle Driving Test with Queensland Transport.The final lesson will be combined with the test ensuring that you are ready to go.
I Need to Drive a 18 Speed Road Ranger?

You will find that upon completion of your training with the 13 Speed Road Ranger gearbox you will have little trouble stepping into an 18 or 15 Speed Road Ranger gearbox truck. The only difference is that in an 18 Speed you are able to split the gears in both high and low range and in a 13 speed you are only able to split the gears in the High Range.
